Civil and 环境 engineering is a people-serving profession and as such is vital to the world’s 经济, 政治, 社会福利. The many areas to which civil engineers make substantial contributions include bridges, Civil engineers engage in a wide range of activities such as research, 设计, 发展, 管理, and the control of engineering systems and their 组件s. With today’s fast-paced technological changes, civil engineering provides unique and unlimited career opportunities that can only be met by professionally educated people.

The civil engineering program is 设计ed with a broad base to prepare men and women for careers in various phases of civil engineering and to enable them to perform other managerial and technical functions that require scientific and engineering backgrounds. The curriculum embraces a sound core of humanities and 社会 studies courses in addition to those in physics, 化学和数学, which form the substructure of engineering 科学s. Electives are available to fit the individual interest of the civil engineering student.

Because of the wide scope of activities in which the civil engineer is engaged, 以及广泛的学生兴趣, civil engineering graduates may choose either to enter the profession immediately after receiving their bachelor’s degree or go directly to graduate school. No matter what the student chooses, the curriculum provides a firm foundation for today’s world.

The bachelor's program in civil engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org

任务

民政部的使命 & Environmental Engineering is to provide students with high quality, accessible undergraduate and graduate civil engineering education; to engage and empower students with skills and knowledge to thrive in professional careers; and to serve society through 经济 and technological 发展 of Southeast Texas and beyond.

The following broad statements describe what the Department’s undergraduate engineers are expected to attain a few years after graduation.

  1. Increasing leadership and responsibility beyond entry level that meet the emerging and evolving demands of civil engineering;
  2. Communication and project 管理 skills for effective problem solving;
  3. Engagement in life-long learning through professional activities, 培训, pursuing licensure and understanding of professional ethics, 公共安全, 成本约束, 环境影响, 以及政策影响.

Student Outcomes Used by the Undergraduate Program

  1. 识别能力, 制定, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, 科学, 和数学
  2. an ability to apply engineering 设计 to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, 安全, 和福利, 以及全球, 文化, 社会, 环境, 经济因素
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global,
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment,
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, 分析和解释数据, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

Program criterion as listed in the ABET "Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs" is as follows:

课程:

The curriculum must prepare graduates to apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, 微积分物理, 化学, and at least one additional area of basic 科学; apply probability and statistics to address uncertainty; analyze and solve problems in at least four technical areas appropriate to civil engineering; conduct experiments in at least two technical areas of civil engineering and analyze and interpret the resulting data; 设计 a system, 组件, or process in at least two civil engineering contexts; include principles of sustainability in 设计; explain basic concepts in project 管理, 业务, 公共政策, and leadership; analyze issues in professional ethics; and explain the importance of professional licensure.
